Adult treatment
Adults have braces and aligners too. The doctor looks at your teeth and gums first, and may ask your dentist to treat gum problems before treatment starts.

What happens
Treatment commonly runs from about a year to two, with check-ins every four to twelve weeks.
Step 1: A talk about what you want
You say what bothers you and what you would like to change, and the doctor says what is realistic.
Step 2: Gums and teeth first
The doctor looks at gum health, old fillings and crowns. If something needs care first, she asks your dentist to see you.
Step 3: Braces or aligners
You choose between them with the doctor, who says which fits your bite and your schedule.
Step 4: Check-ins, then retainers
Check-ins fit around work, and retainers are fitted when treatment is done.

Comfort, choices and care
Comfort
Teeth are often sore for a few days after a new wire or tray. Adults sometimes find soreness lasts a little longer, and we tell you what to try.
If you wait
Teeth keep moving through life, and gum health can change with them. The doctor tells you what she sees and what waiting would change.
Risks and after-care
Gums can recede when teeth move, and teeth with large old fillings or crowns need a careful plan. Teeth move back without retainers.
How it is billed
Many dental plans pay differently for adults, and some pay nothing for orthodontics. We check your benefits before the first visit and give you a written estimate.

Questions about adult treatment
Am I too old for braces?
Age is not the limit; the health of your teeth and gums is. The doctor tells you what she finds.
Do I need to see my dentist first?
It helps if you are up to date on cleanings. If the doctor sees something to treat first, she asks your dentist to see you.
Can I get aligners instead?
Sometimes. The doctor tells you whether your bite suits aligners, braces or either.
Will treatment fit around work?
Check-ins are short, and Wednesday is open until 7 p.m. when you need a late visit.
